Rock River: Magnificent Midwest Birding Destination

Rock river is over 285 miles of birding paradise. The beautiful river makes it’s way through two states, Wisconsin and Illinois. It is actually a tributary of the mighty Mississippi. It does occasionally flood causing road closures and other problems so if you are visiting any of the fabulous points of interest along the Rock River make sure that the river has not flooded the areas that you want to travel.

For birders, this river is a paradise. You will find plenty of different types of birds at different times of the year. One favorite for birders that can be found all along the Rock River, is the majestic Bald Eagle. This massive bird of prey always seems to get the most attention no matter where it is found and it should. It is the Country’s mascot. It symbolizes our freedom. The Bald Eagle was almost wiped out due to pesticides but since those harmful chemicals were removed it has seen huge population growth and it is seen much more often. It is always a favorite for birders and it almost seems to pose for pictures.

One great place to go birding along the Rock River is Castle Rock State Park. This park features a 710 acre nature preserve that is home to many species of birds, unique plants and animals. Pack a lunch and enjoy a picnic along any of the six miles of hiking trails. Just don’t forget your binoculars, cameras and spotting scopes.

Starved Rock State Park is another breathtaking paradise for birders. Along it’s 18 miles of scenic hiking trails you will find beautiful waterfalls, over 200 species of exotic plants and of course birds. You can bet that if a place has natural beauty, the birds will flock to it!
