The Bald Eagle was chosen because some have been spotted nesting south of Grand Detour in the heart of Illinois' Rock River Valley. The Bald Eagle was selected as he is the symbol of the United States of America. He is our symbol as he is not afraid of a storm and is smart enough to soar above it. Also, he wears no material crown, a silent but effective message to England that underscored we can now stand free and on our own.
